Governors are pushing for the referendum to triple the amount of money from the national government to counties/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 13 – Deputy President William Ruto has challenged governors to show Kenyans how they intend to utilise devolved funds to carry out development as calls for referendum intensifies.

Governors are pushing for the referendum to triple the amount of money from the national government to counties.

He told the county chiefs to explain how they plan to utilise tax payers’ money adding they should also be ready to answer accountability questions whenever they arise.

Speaking at Sacred Heart Boarding Primary School- Kyeni in Embu County when he presided over a funds drive in aid of the schools dormitory project, Ruto said prudent use of public funds was paramount.

He said that development can only be achieved by proper planning and utilization of public resources.

At the same time, the Deputy President cautioned leaders against driving a wedge between the national and county governments for selfish purposes.

He said that the two levels of government were not in competition but existed to provide quality service to citizens.

“Let us not drive a wedge between the national government and county government because the two levels of government exist to serve Kenyans,” he said.

He said that the country’s leadership was ready to talk with the county governments on the best way to take the country forward.

“We are ready to talk to governors through existing structures like the Intergovernmental Economic and Budget Council (IBEC) because we want to build this country,” he said.

At the same time, the Deputy President warned those misusing the youth to cause violence in the country.

“We want competition of how to take the country forward and not contest of violence that will take us backwards,’’ Ruto stated.

He said unhealthy competitions only served to divide Kenyans and undermine national unity.

On his part Senate Majority leader Kithure Kindiki called upon governors elected on jubilee ticket to dispel the referendum push.

“We are calling those on the other side to come back because Jubilee’s stand is that there is no referendum,’ said Kindiki.

Embu Governor Martin Wambora who disassociated himself with the referendum call urged his fellow governors to emulate his stand and seek open dialogue with the national government.
