NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 23 – The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union has called off the two-week resident trainee doctors strike at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

This was after a return to work formula between the Ministry of Health and the union.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, the union’s Secretary General Sultani Matendechero said the issue of payment of all outstanding salaries was agreed upon.

“Our members are hereby advised to resume duty immediately so as to help alleviate the unnecessary pain and suffering to which our patients have been subjected over the past two weeks,” he stated.

He also said the Ministry of Health has commenced the process of transferring the payroll from all affected county governments back to the Ministry of Health headquarters.

The union has also called on the government to form a central body that will be dealing with health issues to avoid the ongoing wrangles in the sector.

“The doctor’s union wishes to express deep concern over the obtaining trend within the health sector, whereby working conditions and provision of services continue to worsen by the day,” he pointed out.

“Numerous strikes and disruption of services have become the norm in this sector which is supposed to offer essential services.”

The union has called on the government to employ more health workers saying the current situation was uncontrollable.

They have also called for the, “immediate stoppage and rectification of random transfers of payroll data.”
