Rigid regime forced us to referendum – Ruto

The two were among other lawyers who were engaged in the Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations debate on the referendum to demystify the facts from the myths where the public present expressed their concerns over the proposed referendum.

While expressing his support for the ‘Pesa Mashinani’ plebiscite call, Aukot said governors should however be ready to account for the funds allocated to them.

“I support ‘Pesa Mashinani’ 100 percent, but let’s do it within the law and of course accountability is a very important issue,” said Aukot.

He went on to say: “CORD’s issues are very important, but I think they are more a failure of government and its policy than the Constitution itself. Even if you write the best of the Constitutions, in most classical language or whatever the case it may be, but if you do not believe in it… if you do not have the right drivers of that Constitution, it may not even be worth the paper it is written on,” added Aukot.

Lately, Kenyans have been treated to a series of debates by the Senate and Governors over accountability issues after three governors (Bomet, Kiambu and Kisumu) declining to honour summons to appear before the Sessional County Public Accounts and Investments Committee to answer to audit questions over how funds allocated to the counties in the last financial year were used.

Ruto – who is among governors who have defied summons to appear before the Senate committee – said those summoning them simply didn’t have anything better to do.
