NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 24 – Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo on Wednesday warned service commanders that they will be held responsible for the conduct of junior officers under their supervision.

Kimaiyo directed the commanders to conduct a lifestyle audit of the officers and recommend their suitability to continue serving in the service.

He specifically pointed out that commanders will be held accountable and answerable for the actions of their juniors engaging in criminal acts and misuse of firearms.

“Especially for the last one week, it’s worrying. The same enforcing officers use carelessly the tools of work they have been entrusted with by misusing them against the same society they are supposed to protect,” he lamented.

He pointed out that “the National Police Service is the security organ which has the express mandate of providing and ensuring the country is protected from internal aggression. This is a task which we have always committed ourselves into executing and fulfilling.”

“I would therefore urge you to always follow the laid down chain of command to resolve any conflicts that may occur in the course of your duty for whatever reason.”

He said the commanders must ensure that rogue police officers who continue to tarnish the name of the police service are removed from the force.

“This one is clear; it is not that we do not know…this is a rogue person who has gone out of his way to commit such crimes,” he pointed out.

“You look at the incidences of shooting innocent members of the society and of the service too. We cannot have that kind of indiscipline in the service and we must deal with it immediately.”

Kimaiyo was speaking during the opening of the 8th Administration Police service commanders annual conference in Mombasa.

On Monday an administration police officer attached at Tinderet Sub County was among four gangsters arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International airport in connection with a series of bank robberies.

On Tuesday, at least four people were shot and seriously wounded after a meeting to discuss the ouster of Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana turned chaotic in Wote town.

Those wounded include Kibwana’s chief of staff, a bodyguard and two county officials who were allegedly shot when the county assembly’s security personnel opened fire to disperse a charged crowd.

Trouble is said to have started when a group of youths reportedly stormed the meeting of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) that was allegedly planning the governor’s ouster.

Kimaiyo also asked police to adapt proper ways of solving disagreements among themselves.
