NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 25 – The Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) is now planning to limit its proposed referendum questions from five to three.

Speaking during a meeting with over 1,300 elected national and county leaders, Raila said they would look to other means of addressing the issues.

Odinga said the referendum campaign was occasioned by the government’s refusal to open dialogue with the opposition.

“This is not a contest between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga. Nor is it an attempt to revive or to end political careers,” he continued. “We are not in this because we love our government less. We are in this because we love Kenya more. And we are in it within the law for we believe in the rule of law.”

Kitui County Senator David Musila supported the call claiming that an overloaded referendum agenda might be used by their competitors to mislead Kenyans into rejecting their amendments.

CORD through the Okoa Kenya Initiative proposes to strengthen the Senate, while pushing for a dramatic increase of revenues to the counties from 15 percent to 45 percent of the total audited and approved national revenue.

Okoa Kenya Committee of Experts Chairman Paul Mwangi said they will submit a draft bill in 30 days for public scrutiny after reviewing public submission on issues such as electoral reforms, land reforms, increasing funding to the judiciary and inclusivity as the main issues for their referendum campaign.

At the same time, Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetangula defended the push for the amendments saying that they were necessary despite opposition from the government and Jubilee Coalition legislators.

The opposition says it has collected over one million signatures of its five million target to push through the referendum.

The forum also saw the launch of the civic education programme as well as CORD MCA’s County Working Group which shall coordinate the operations of county assemblies at the grassroots level and at the same time act as a liaison with the Coalition’s national leadership.
