Mombasa county in renewed war on drugs

MOMBASA, Kenya Sept 27 – Police have shut down 29 Drug Dens in Mombasa county as the government declared war on drug trafficking menace which is a major hindrance to development in the coastal region.

Mombasa county commissioner Nelson Marwa has announced that the dens were shut down in Likoni, Changamwe, Kisauni and Mvita constituencies.

“We are committed to ending the drug abuse menace here,” Marwa said after chairing a security meeting, “We need the public to work closely with us to achieve our goal.”

Marwa said he has ordered the chiefs to reveal names of suspected drug barons and peddlers before next week Wednesday.

“We will not spare anyone,” he vowed, adding “this is a major problem which need concerted efforts to succeed.”

Marwa said they government is determined to arrest the drug dealers behind the illicit drug business that has also contributed to insecurity in the county which is Kenya’s leading tourist destination.

Although unemployment is often blamed for the large number of youths abusing drugs, Marwa said it is difficult for the youth to secure jobs when they are on drugs.

“This culture must change. The youth must transform,” he said.

He revealed that detectives are investigating foreigners who own car bazaars that are used in drug trafficking.
Marwa said intelligence reports had indicated some of the car bazaars are used in the smuggling of drugs from foreign countries.
The county commissioner urged local leaders to join in the war on drug trafficking that has greatly ruined lives of thousands of youth in Mombasa.

The decision to destroy the ship and the drugs has sparked sharp criticism from a cross section of Kenyans, having been done despite an existing court order.
