Kriegler defends IEBC over 2013 poll

They accused the commission of arrogance in their dealings with the parties, “you decide where and when we meet,” Ngetich Fundi of the United Democratic Party accused.

While Fred Muteti, the Secretary General of the United Republican Party, said that while he did not recommend the disbandment of the Commissioners, the Commission needed reform.

Onesmus Musyoka, Founding Chairman Kenya National Congress, on the other hand questioned why IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan and his team were still in office while the CEO James Oswago had been charged with corruption. “The buck stops with you,” he told Hassan.

IEBC Chairman Issack Hassan did not take the criticism lying down and compared attending a meeting with political parties to a dentist appointment.

“We want to respect you but you also must respect the institutions. It’s not good to be heckled or heckle each other. Even if you don’t agree with me at least give me the chance to speak,” he appealed.

But he did however acknowledge the need for a retreat with the party leaders during which they would iron out their issues, “man to man and woman to woman,” Hassan said.

And as the IEBC works to, “diagnose and remedy,” – according to Kriegler – what ailed them in the 2013 general election; Hassan said more sackings may follow that of Deputy CEO Wilson Shollei, Director Finance Edward Karisa, ICT Director Dismas Ong’ondi and Procurement Manager Willy Kamanga.

“The Commission is going to carefully consider all the reports it has received from the Auditor General, from the National treasury, from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and take appropriate action. But every person who is affected will be given a fair hearing because that is what the Constitution requires us to do. Every person will be given the right to fair hearing before he’s condemned,” he sought to assure.
