Arrest parents who fail to take children to school – Ruto

this should not happen as leaders watch from a distance. We want to get answers on why children are not in schools,” said Ruto.

He said from the time free primary education was introduced, it is no longer optional for parents to take their children to schools but a must for them to do so saying those who failed to do so risk being arrested.

“There should be no debate on whether children should be taken to schools or not. Education is no longer optional but a must for all children and education stakeholders should ensure this is done,” he said.

Outlining the importance of education in providing equal opportunities, the Deputy President said the greatest empowerment any generation could give to its people was the empowerment of knowledge through education.

“We have increased free primary education funds from Sh10billion to Sh14 billion this year. This is not enough. We have also increased the secondary schools money from Sh18billion to Sh28billion. But who will benefit from these funds if your children are not in schools? asked Ruto.

Noting that education was the greatest equalizer as it gave equal opportunities to all pupils irrespective of their family backgrounds, the Deputy President said another Sh4billion has been set aside for the administration of examination this financial year.

He said no student in standard eight and form four will be required to pay examination fee to be registered.

Ruto who also laid a foundation stone for the construction of Garbatula technical training institute said the Government was committed to establishing middle level colleges to train youth on technical skills needed in fostering economic growth through innovation.

“These institutions will help develop youth expertise and skills necessary for the development of this nation,” he said.

He added that the Government has set aside Sh25 million to revive the fallen giant Garbatula High school so as to restore its previous glory saying Sh20million will be dispatched to the institution in the next one week.

The Deputy President told managers of schools to ensure funds were utilized for the intended projects in their institutions warning of stern action against those who misused public funds.

Leaders among them Kindiki, Kuti and Murkomen dismissed those opposed to harambees to help build schools among other projects saying institutions cannot be devolved without such funds.
They said those opposed to harambees were enemies on development saying they were enemies of development.
