The IGAD summit was chaired by the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn and also attended by regional leaders including Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Salva Kiir of South Sudan and his political rival, former vice-president Riek Machar.
The leaders gave the warring sides 45 days within which they should form a transitional government.
IGAD also declared a humanitarian crisis in South Sudan and resolved to take action against those obstructing the attainment of peace in South Sudan including denying them participation in future governance arrangements in the country.
Before travelling to Ethiopia, the President was in Kampala, Uganda where he held talks with Museveni and South Sudan’s Kiir ahead of the IGAD summit.
He also addressed a forum of 3,000 youths from East Africa on leadership, management and business during a high-profile ‘Townhall’ meeting in Kampala.
The plane carrying the President and his delegation touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly before 8pm and was received by senior Government officials led by Deputy President William Ruto.
