Pageant to select Nairobi’s tourism ambassador

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 8 – Efforts to promote sustainable tourism in Nairobi County will be achieved through the launch of the Miss Tourism Nairobi County Pageant.

This initiative will be rolled out to other counties across the country with the aim of making Kenya a competitive global tourist destination with a wide range of attractions.

Nairobi County Executive Committee Member, Trade, Industry, Co-operative Development and Tourism, Annah Othoro says the Nairobi pageant which targets over 3,000 female contestants aged between 21 and 28 will see the winner branded Ambassador of Nairobi Tourism.

“We decided that this is something that we wanted to support to be able to make sure that we get the right girls saying the right stories about each of our different counties in Kenya. But there is so much more if you look at all the counties, we need to start talking about them positively; that is what the girls will begin to do! They will become the ambassador of their respective counties,” she said.

“As you may recall, the national blueprint Vision 2030 identifies the tourism sector as one of the key economic pillars. As a county government, we are also keen to contribute towards growth of the sector.”

Patron of Miss Tourism Kenya Catherine Mueke says the pageant is guided by the need to continuously improve the livelihood of young women in Nairobi through various activities including promotion of tourism.

Mueke says the pageant will provide the seventeen semi-finalists with the opportunity of attachments to local companies and at the same time attain leadership training and knowledge.

“Miss Tourism Nairobi shall help Nairobi in ensuring that it creates awareness of what goes on in Nairobi as a country in terms of tourism. She will be our brand for our tourism product, she will be able to tour other counties as she sells Nairobi because we are not only targeting international tourist but also domestic tourists,” she said.

“Contestants will be attached to companies where they will be expected to participate in the company’s forums, to socialise as well as add value to the forums in terms of ideas, discussions and labour outputs.”
