Lamu curfew extended to September 21/file

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 20 – The Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has extended Lamu County curfew for another month from August 21 to September 21, 2014.

The curfew takes effect from 6.30pm to 6.30am.

Addressing journalists in Nairobi, Kimaiyo directed every person residing in Lamu County to remain indoors during the period the curfew order is in force.

“During this time members of the public are expected to comply with the aforementioned instructions and similarly cooperate with the security agencies in order to achieve the objective of this operation,” he stated.

Kimaiyo said the move is in bid to carry out more security operations so as to make the area completely secure and safe for citizens.

“On expiry of this period the security situation will be reviewed and appropriate advice and direction will be given to the public accordingly, “he stated.

He said since the curfew was imposed on July 19, 2014, there has been a reduction of insecurity incidences with life, economic and social activities going back to normal.

“I want to commend the officers operating under the inter-agency security operation for the work they are performing in maintaining peace, law and order in the areas, I also want to commend the citizens for abiding with the law and observing these curfew orders,” he said.

The Curfew imposed on 19th July 2014 was prompted by the spiralling insecurity in the county which has left over 90 people dead and property of unknown value destroyed.
