Kajwang’ was expected to defend himself over claims of irregular registration of illegal immigrants whom the Jubilee coalition believes are responsible for the various terror attacks that have rocked the country.
While addressing a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale said as soon as the government finished dealing with the land issue which it its currently probing, it would move to the Immigration Department which it claims had been engaging in massive corruption which saw illegal immigrants and persons of questionable character issued with Kenyan registration documents, work permits and passports.
“The Jubilee administration will be moving to the Immigration docket because this was the docket served by the famous guy called ‘mapambano’…so I can tell my good friend Senator Kajwang, you better start compiling your 1,000 work permits you have revoked but very soon we will produce the 500,000 work permits and passports and citizenships that you have issued irregularly by getting corrupt money either through bank transactions which we have, the M-PESA on your phone and through the cheques you received through proxies,” Duale warned.
The leaders asked Kajwang’ to brace himself for a fight as they claimed to have tangible evidence pitting Kajwang’ and his associates in alleged corruption in the registration department. The leaders added that this was part of the work the government was doing to clean various ministries that have been dogged with corruption allegations in the past.
Recent years have seen an influx of many Somalis who are fleeing their country because of war and quite a number of them have been recruited by the Islamist group Al Shabaab. The terror group has claimed responsibility for some of the terror attacks including the siege at the Westgate mall that saw over 67 people lose their lives.
The recurrent terror attacks that rocked the country in the period between March and April was what prompted the government to conduct an operation in Eastleigh area of Nairobi County which is mostly inhabited by persons of Somali origin, some of whom were thought to be in the country illegally.
Over 1,000 people were arrested in the swoop, a situation that led to public outcry over the manner in which the operation was conducted and the conditions in which those that were arrested were being held at the Kasarani stadium.
