NAIROBI, Kenya Aug 10 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced Sunday that all is set for the bruising Mathare by-election scheduled to take place on Monday.

The constituency’s Returning Officer Joseph Masindet told Capital News beat that all the materials, including ballot papers have already been delivered and are being distributed to the 115 polling stations.

“The ballot papers are here we are loading the last pieces of Material inside the ballot boxes all the clerks have been trained, they are waiting to collect their materials heading to the stations,” he said.

Masindet says IEBC is working closely with security agencies in ensuring the by election is carried out peacefully.

“Every polling station will be manned by two police officers we have already received the full list police officers, we are going to have patrol lorries and cars overall we will also have backup just in case of anything but we believe Mathare people will conduct themselves in a peaceful manner,” he said.

The by-election is seen as a major contest between the ruling Jubilee Alliance and Opposition coalition CORD.

Jubilee is fronting George Wanjohi under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party TNA while Stephen Kariuki is vying under ODM, a coalition party in Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s CORD.

The two will battle it out with seven other candidates, including four vying independently.

Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama and his Siaya Counterpart James Orengo are convinced that by winning the Mathare seat, CORD will reduce TNA’s numbers in the National Assembly.

Their Jubilee rivals are however, confident of recapturing the seat which fell vacant following the nullification of Wanjohi’s win by the Supreme Court which ruled that there were massive irregularities in the March 4 election.
