Senators allied to the Jubilee Coalition on Sunday sustained pressure on the governors to quit President Uhuru Kenyatta’s coalition, saying they are undermining his government.
Led by Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki, the Senators who include Elgeyo Marakwet’s Kipchumba Murkomen and Nominated Senator Beatrice Elachi accused the governors of fighting the government from within.
“It is clear they are working with the opposition to undermine the government,” Kindiki said, “they should quit Jubilee and never use it to seek votes in 2017.”
Murkomen on his part said the referendum calls by the governors is only aimed at reviving the opposition “which is dying”.
“Amendment of the constitution is merely a by-product, the governors are out to revive the opposition which is dead,” he said, when they attended a fundraising at Nkoroi PCEA in Ongata Rongai.
The Council of Governors has unveiled a team which will push for the national referendum to demand the increase of funds for counties, insisting it should be 45 per cent of the national revenue.

“They have denounced Jubilee, they have no business remaining in the party while at the same time calling the national referendum,” Duale said, “these are traitors now, they are speaking the same language with the opposition who are also calling for the same.”
Council of Governors Chairman Isaac Ruto has however, denied they are working with the opposition, insisting their push for a referendum is “totally different.”
“We are not together at all, our push for the referendum is guided by the need to seek more funds for the counties so as to protect devolution,” he said while unveiling a technical team to lay ground for the national plebiscite.
CORD is similarly pushing for a national referendum, motivated by under funding for the counties among other governance issues.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed the referendum calls by CORD leader Raila Odinga, terming them “wastage of public funds.”
“Just one and a half years after we have started implementing these provisions some people are asking for a referendum. Are we going to have a referendum every one year?” posed the President when he addressed the Kenyan diaspora in Dallas, after attending the US-Africa leaders summit in Washington DC.
