Burglars on the loose in Nairobi suburbs

In almost all items stolen in these cases, police observe that no item has been seen on e-commercial sites.

Recovering a lost or stolen smartphone is much easier and also other electronics fitted with security codes. But police say the new breed of thieves has adapted to technological trends.

“Thugs know how to erase serial numbers… and even to format the security settings,” a police officer investigating a similar case says.

“The goods are sneaked into the black market where they are sold to unsuspecting buyers.”

Nairobi downtown, more so along Kirinyaga road is one of the areas suspected to harbour such stolen goods.

Nairobi County Police Chief Benson Kibui cautions that some house helps could be colluding with criminal gangs. You should vet whoever you decide to be responsible of your security, he says and also ensure you have all their identification documents.

With the Nyumba Kumi initiative, Kibui says security within the residential areas can get better.

“This initiative has made security to become a personal responsibility, we must own it,” he says.

Recently, the Government approved the government’s Sh15 billion security contract awarded to Safaricom in a five-year plan to modernise security sector in the country.

This is in a bid to counter thugs who are using sophisticated means to execute their evil plans.

If fully implemented, Kenya will have tech-savvy police officers and hopefully the trend will change.
