Alarm over maternal deaths in Kisumu

“Some of the women do not come to deliver in the hospitals because of the distance, as a county we have decided to equip the dispensaries will all the necessary items to be used and to have specialists at the hospitals,” he said.

Ogutu further noted that it was unacceptable to see women die in the cause of childbirth, given the advances in technology and modern health care in the country.

She said some women are not even aware that giving birth in a public health facility is free of charge under the Jubilee administration.

“Women should utilize these interventions, like the Beyond Zero Campaign being spearheaded by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta. These are initiatives that will save our mothers from these unnecessary deaths,” she said.

Lusi further cautioned women who deliver at home that they are susceptible to develop fistula complications that are equally high in the region.

“Vast majority of fistula is caused by lack of emergency obstetric care during obstructed labour, it is becoming increasingly apparent that most of it is caused by traditional birth attendants who have inadequate skills,” he said.
