NYAHURURU, Kenya, July 27 – One of the three Administration Police Officers who were killed when armed men ambushed a bus in Lamu county last Friday has been buried at his home in Kipipiri.

Benson Wanjohi was laid to rest on Saturday at a somber ceremony attended by hundreds of relatives, friends and local leaders.

Wanjohi was among four policemen, a nurse at Hindi Hospital and another man who died when gunmen sprayed bullets on Tahmeed bus in Witu on Friday last week.

Speakers at the funeral service condemned the criminal attacks at the coast with calls to intensify security operations to weed out criminals operating in the area.

Led by Kipipiri Member of Parliament Samwel Gichigi, Nyandarua Woman Representative Wanjiku Muhia and Deputy Governor Waithaka Mwangi Kirika, they also called on all leaders to unite in fighting crime instead of politicising the matter.

Gichigi said it was unfortunate to lose such young officers through criminal attacks and called for the review of the police service and retraining of both the administration and regular police officers to enable them are able to keep abreast with the emerging modern crimes.

He also emphasised the need to re-look into the terms and conditions of the employment of security officers saying they were now facing very challenging situations.

He said their salaries, insurance, health; terminal benefits and pension need to be improved to ensure they get the bests from the crucial service they give to the nation.

On her part, Wanjiku Muhia called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku to restructure the security agencies saying the wave of crime especially at the coast was out of control and needed serious and urgent attention.

The Nyandarua MP at the same time called on leaders from across the political divide to stop politicising security matters saying this was not an issue to play with and called for concerted efforts.

Nyandarua Deputy Governor Waithaka Mwangi Kirika urged leaders to appreciate and understand the issues of security as a concern for all.

He said anyone with a solution to the matter was welcome to forward their ideas through proper channels.

Waithaka condemned the perpetrators of such heinous crimes in the country and challenged Kenyans to embrace the call for nyumba kumi initiative saying there was a need for Kenyans to know their nieghbours well to help in fighting crime.
