NAIROBI, Kenya, July 25 – The driver of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been charged with robbery with violence and sexual assault at the Kisumu High Court.

During the court proceedings Erick Ominde however denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh500,000 or a Sh300,000 cash bail.

The magistrate had earlier issued a warrant of arrest for Ominde after he failed to appear during the 9am session.

However the magistrate later lifted the two warrants including the one that was issued earlier this month by Senior Principal Magistrate Samuel Atonga.

Ominde was then driven under tight security to Kisumu Central Police station to record a statement.

He is accused of committing the offenses in the Kirembe area of Kisumu East district.

There was a confrontation between security officers and Odinga’s supporters at the Kisumu International Airport early this month when police attempted to arrest Ominde on allegations of incitement.

The driver was arrested and handcuffed, ready to be taken to the cells, when the former Prime Minister’s bodyguards and civilian onlookers forced the police to set him free.

Airport security officers and a number of Odinga’s guards drew their guns, as a heated argument ensued.

CORD supporters who joined the disagreement shouted the police down, pushing and shoving, forcing the officers to remove the handcuffs and release the driver. Passengers and other airport visitors were left tongue-tied during the melee.

Ominde had just dropped the former Prime Minister at the airport when CID officers pounced on him. At that moment Raila and other CORD leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula, were in the VIP lounge.

The charge sheet stated that Ominde robbed a woman of two Sony recorders, a Sony digital camera, a mobile phone and Sh7,500 cash. The value of cash and property taken from her is estimated at Sh74,500, and she further claimed that she was physically assaulted.
