“If the investigations find that the police recruitment was marred with corruption and other malpractices then appropriate action and prosecution will be taken against all those found culpable,” he said.
Speaking in Lumakanda in Kakamega County, the Deputy President said that the recruitment was supposed to be an open undertaking devoid of all forms of corruption.
Ruto noted that officers involved in the recruitment exercise were duty bound to make unbiased decisions devoid of favoritism and other forms of irregularities to restore confidence in the exercise.
“We demand of them accountability because they were entrusted with the recruitment at various levels,’’ said the DP.
He observed that it would be ironical for those trusted with the maintenance or law and order in country to have been picked in a flawed exercise.
He added that it was necessary such an important process be done strictly on merit and with due regard to the provisions of the law.
‘’How can we recruit those supposed to stem corruption in a corrupt way? That’s why we demand accountability from Inspector-General of Police David Kimaiyo and the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman Johnstone Kavuludi,’’ he said.
The Deputy President who was addressing mourners at a funeral service of the late Selina Jirongo – mother to former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo – said the government will develop all parts of the country without discrimination.
He pointed out that apart from recruitment of 10,000 police officers, an additional 2,000 police vehicles will be purchased this year to assist in beefing up security in the country.
Speaking during the same occasion, Amani Coalition leader Musalia Mudavadi took issue against those calling for a referendum.
Mudavadi said that it would be a waste of funds and absolutely unnecessary to engage national resources in such an exercise at this moment when the government was focused on moving the country forward.
“If we do our mathematics properly, we will find this to be an expensive exercise that will force the government to raise Value Added Tax (VAT) to meet the cost,’’ Mudavadi said.
He said time for elections was over, emphasising that focus should now be on developing the country.
“Let Kenya not be in a permanent election mood because it’s not good for our economy,’’ he said.
