NAIROBI, Kenya July 30 – House Committee meetings planned for Thursday and Friday have been deferred to allow Members of Parliament participate in the ongoing Parliament Week.

The inaugural Parliament Week which kicked off on Monday with a public lecture by the two House Speakers at the University of Nairobi will on Thursday morning see Senators take on their National Assembly colleagues in a football match and a tug-of-war competition for men and netball for women lawmakers.

In their communication to both Houses, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and Senate Deputy Speaker Kembi Gitura said attendance for the event is compulsory.

“In order to facilitate attendance by the Honourable members, all committees are requested to defer any committee meetings at any time before noon,” the Speakers told the MPs.

The event is aimed at providing an avenue for both Houses of Parliament to explain their functions and mandate to the public.

In his communication to the Senate, Gitura further announced that the public parking space at Parliament Buildings which is used by the Senate leadership and its Standing Committees Chairmen will be off-limits to facilitate preparations for an open day to be held on Friday.

“To facilitate the pitching of tents in this area, the public parking will be unavailable from Thursday to Friday. Alternative arrangements have been made available for parking at the COMESA Grounds at the KICC,” Gitura said.

As part of its efforts to engage with the public, Parliament intends to take such forums to the counties in future.
