NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 5 – Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Joseph Kinyua has reminded civil servants that Monday is not a public holiday.

Kinyua said roll calls will be conducted in offices and public servants who fail to turn up for duty without permission will be disciplined.

“As is normal procedure, disciplinary action will be taken against any public servant who abscond duty,” the Head of Public Service warned.

Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has been calling on workers to skip work on Monday so they can attend the Saba Saba rally at Uhuru Park, in a move to seek national dialogue on security, alleged corruption, the cost of living, government appointments and reconstitution of the electoral commission.

The Public Service boss told public servants to ‘adhere to the code of regulations that govern your terms and conditions of service’.

He reminded public servants that they were duty bound to deliver quality services to all Kenyans at all times without disruption.

The Central Organisations of Trade Unions alongside the Union of Kenya Civil Servants and Public Service Trade Union on Friday said there is no holiday for members to attend the Saba Saba rally.

“There is no industrial stalemate to warrant our members to abscond duty on Monday. We urge members to ignore statements that it is a public holiday because everybody is expected to work,” Secretary General of the Union of Kenya Civil Servants Tom Odege.

“It will be impossible to offer legal protection to any worker who will be dismissed on grounds of missing work for other functions.”
