Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa said investigators are in possession of evidence showing that the attack was motivated and funded by the Opposition party.
He indicated that youths were funded to undertake what he termed as ethnic cleansing in the region.
“We have credible information that ODM youths are involved. It doesn’t mean that the top leaders are involved. These are youths who are being given money and we have evidence towards that effect where we have youths from a particular community being hired to kill people of their own community,” he said.
A major security operation involving the military and police was conducted in Likoni on Wednesday during which dozens of suspects were arrested.
“The elders are here from the same community… we have the evidence. Does that mean the entire party? No. We must just say the truth here.”
They are given a little bit of money and then they start causing chaos,” he stated. “It doesn’t mean that the entire party is involved and that is why we are cautioning the youth not to be used to cause mayhem.”
He revealed that the youths were present during the Saba Saba rally where they were given security badges and were keeping watch over the event.
“We want to believe that part of that group is what is causing chaos in the county. This country belongs to all Kenyans and majority of these youth are the ones tormenting people here and people are afraid to say so,” he indicated.
Dozens of suspects were on Wednesday arrested in the major security operation conducted by police and the military in Likoni, Mombasa where a hand grenade was found.
The suspects, some thought to have criminal records were picked up when security forces conducted a house-to-house search in the area.
The Russian-made grenade was detonated by a team of bomb experts from the Kenya Defence Forces.
Likoni police boss Richard Mureithi says officers from Mtongwe Military Base secured the scene before the grenade was safely detonated.
Business and learning in several schools within Likoni was interrupted during the security operation that went on for more than three hours.
