NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 11 – A few metres from Dagoretti Administration Police post along Ndwaru Road, residents of the area are yet to come to terms with an incident where a man killed his wife and then tried to commit suicide.

As we ask for the exact location, we notice the sadness written all over the faces of neighbours who knew the young couple.

“Even a pot is often opened to let off the steam when cooking,” one of the women said in Kikuyu as she gave directions to the Capital FM News crew.

John Njenga aged 30, and a father of two stabbed his wife to death before attempting to kill himself by slitting his throat.

He is recovering at the Kenyatta National Hospital under heavy police guard after the brutal killing.

He is said to have used three kitchen knives to commit the crime.

Njenga’s wife, Magdalene Wanjiku, who was a primary school teacher at Precious Blood Primary School was 28 years old.

Though still grief stricken, Polycarp Mwale the caretaker where the couple lives, recalled the horrid incident. “It was about 7am in the morning when I was told that there was a problem at this house (pointing at where Njenga lives with his family). The first born who is eight years old was crying,” he recounted.

“The kid only said that her mum and dad were all sleeping and had refused to wake up. The woman was still in her bed covered while the husband was lying lifeless in the seat.”

“We thought both were dead… blood was all over.”

The two kids were taken by Wanjiku’s colleagues until family members arrived at around 4pm.

Police attached to Dagoretti Administration Police found the lifeless body of Wanjiku in a pool of blood with several stab wounds on the neck and on the left side of her chest.

At the time, the killer husband was unconscious due to over bleeding following a botched suicide attempt by cutting his throat.

Last week, a man beheaded his pregnant wife in Raneni trading centre in Awendo, Migori County following a dispute over a bundle of iron sheets.

Witnesses said the man had resolved to sell a bundle of iron sheets that the couple had earlier bought to build a house, an idea his wife was against.

The woman, who was a mother of three, was a hawker at the trading centre.

“The children are left to suffer when parents fight, there are always better ways of dealing with challenges,” Mohammed pointed out.
