MOMBASA, Kenya Jun 16 – Police in Mombasa say they have arrested the main suspect behind last week’s killing of the chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya, Sheikh Mohammed Idris.

The suspect was arrested with a pistol, hand grenade and four rounds of ammunition by detectives in Likoni.

Area police boss Robert Mureithi says detectives have handed over the weapons for ballistics examination.

The suspect, Mohamed Sudi Mohamed, was on Monday arraigned in court and denied charges of possessing a hand grenade on June 14 without authority.

Mohamed also faced another charge of being in possession of a firearm and four rounds of ammunition in contravention of the penal code.

The court was informed that the firearm and ammunition had recently been used in a manner prejudicial to public order.

The accused also denied two other charges of being in possession of 108 pieces of video discs for purpose of instigating a terrorist act and being a member of the Mombasa Republican Council.

The court was informed that Mohamed was arrested by police after getting a tip off from the public.

Chief Magistrate Maxwell Gicheru ordered the accused to be remanded at the Likoni Police Station for 14 days and appear in court on June 30, when the case will be mentioned.
