NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 17 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned retired General Jackson Kimeu Mulinge, describing him as a great soldier who led a life of honour, service and patriotism.

The President said the late Gen Mulinge’s valour, hard work and commitment earned him the rank of full General – becoming the first Kenyan military officer to attain that rank.

President Kenyatta observed that Gen Mulinge served the military diligently and particularly displayed a high level of loyalty and patriotism when he quashed coup attempts in 1971 and 1982.

“Yet for all his achievements, everyone who knew and worked with General Mulinge respected him as a humble, kind and courageous man, devoted to his family, community and nation,” President Kenyatta said.

He said Gen Mulinge’s devotion and diligence saw him implement several development projects after he retired from the military and joined politics as a Member of Parliament for Kathiani Constituency.

That illustrious service, President Kenyatta said, was rewarded by former President Daniel arap Moi, who appointed him a Minister in his Government.

“Indeed, General Mulinge’s passing is a big loss not only to his family and the people of Kathiani, but also the nation which he served with a single sense of duty,” President Kenyatta said.

He added: “As we mourn the great soldier, let us thank God for giving him a full life stretching 90 years, and be grateful for the time we shared with him, just as we should be grateful for the full use he made of it.”

Conveying his condolences to General Mulinge’s family, relatives, friends and the people of Kathiani, President Kenyatta prayed to God to give them the strength and courage to bear the loss.
