MOMBASA, Kenya, June 2 – Police in Mombasa are reviewing strategies to combat crime in the coastal region, following increased terror threats and general crime.

Security agencies in the region have been on high alert for a couple of weeks, following terror attacks and threats posed by Al Shabaab, but have now resolved to adopt new strategies of fighting crime.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa who announced the new plan on Sunday did not however, reveal details of the measures they plan to adopt.

Besides the terror threats experienced in the coastal region, ordinary crime trend is wanting, after killings of several people shot dead or attacked by armed thugs.

On Sunday night, a businessman was shot dead by armed gangsters during a robbery incident at Bondeni area along Digo Road in Mombasa, according to police.

Mombasa police boss Geoffrey Mayek says the businessman was shot at close range by people who seemed to have been looking for him.

Mayek told journalists that the gangsters are believed to be behind Saturday’s attack where another businessman was shot dead and robbed within Mombasa town.

Apart from the two killings, police are still investigating shootings of four people killed in similar fashions.

Police are yet to establish the motive behind the killings, after residents claimed that some of those killed were police informers.
