NAIROBI, Kenya, May 5 – Burglars broke into the house of Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior on Sunday afternoon and stole money and goods of unknown value.

The Senator told police he had just stepped out of his house on Riverside Drive to buy items at a nearby shopping centre when the thugs struck.

“He was not in the house when the attack occurred,” a police officer who saw the Senator’s complaint told Capital FM News.

According to police, the Senator lost about Sh20,000 and household goods of unknown value.

When reached for comment, the legislator said, he also lost documents, his mobile phone and jewellery.

“I reported the matter to the police and I have been assured that an investigation is underway,” he said.

Nairobi County Police Chief Benson Kibue says they have launched an investigation into the burglary.

“The investigation is underway, no suspect has been arrested yet,” Kibue said.

Sunday afternoon’s incident follows several others reported almost daily from Nairobi’s well-off suburbs which are experiencing an upsurge in similar cases.

In Kileleshwa, Lavington and Karen for instance, police have confirmed that they receive at least five complaints daily.

“It is becoming too much, and we suspect there is collusion with guards,” one senior police officer said.

In February, Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo and his wife Catherine were attacked and robbed at their Karen home.
