NAIROBI, Kenya, May 12 – Residents of Kiambu County on Monday engaged their Governor William Kabogo on social media in a move aimed at encouraging public participation in all the county’s governance issues.

Through a social platform on the Internet dubbed #Kiambuchat on Twitter and Facebook, Kabogo has assured the county residents of his commitment to ensure devolution works for the benefit of the residents.

The residents raised issues of land grabbing, solid waste management, road networking, agriculture and insecurity.

“The Kiambu government is working on recovering stolen property. People have a tendency of grabbing public land. I urge the public to support the county on this,” the Governor asserted.

On solid waste management, he said the county intends to put up new dumpsites noting that the county will use modern technology in dealing with the challenge.

On road connections, Kabogo explained that some 250 kilometres of rural roads have been constructed in a span of one year. He also pointed out that the county had set a quality assurance and ethics board to ensure that all the roads are done to the acceptable standards.

On agriculture, the Governor said the county has strategies to ensure that it focuses on value addition for agri-business, e-agriculture and empowerment of youth and women to invest in agriculture.

“We passed the Kiambu County Youth, Women and People with Disabilities Development Fund Bill that will go a long way into funding agri-businesses. We shall facilitate the youth to acquire green houses that will steer greater development,” he said.

In tackling the challenges of insecurity, Kabogo called on the National Government to assist in controlling the situation.

While calling for support of the Nyumba Kumi initiative, he said the county was in the process of installing flood lights in all the wards as a security measure.
