In a statement, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho pointed out that the advisories by the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and France only serve to spread fear and panic in the country.
He indicated that the countries which issued the latest travel bans should understand repercussions of terror.
“The challenges arising from acts of terrorism require concerted efforts to fight it and not behaving in a manner that accelerates it by causing fear and panic. Issuance of such travel advisories only plays to the whims of bad elements on society whose aim is to spread fear and panic among otherwise peace loving people,” he stated.
He has reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting terrorism and urged Kenyans to work closely with security agencies at all times.
“The Government of Kenya would like to assure all Kenyans and friends of Kenya that our security forces remain vigilant and will continue to thwart any attempts to disrupt peace. Visitors are assured of utmost security and safety while in Kenya,” he said.
“We also wish to reiterate our cordial relations with these countries and longstanding friendship and cooperation with them in various areas including the fight against terrorism. The advisories therefore are obviously unfriendly acts coming from our partners who have equally borne the brunt of global terrorism and no doubt understand the repercussions of the terror menace,” he indicated.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) warning cited Nairobi’s high density settlements, including Kibera, Mathare, Huruma, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mukuru kwa Reuben, Korogocho, Kariobangi, Kangemi, Mwiki and Kawangware, for high crime levels.
Kibera is a tourist attraction, with foreigners and aid workers visiting it after it was cited as one of Africa’s largest slums.
British citizens have further been advised to avoid Mombasa Island and areas within five kilometres of the coast from Mtwapa Creek in the north to Tiwi in the south.
Other areas are Kiwayuu and the coastal area north of Pate Island in Lamu County.
The British have been advised to take a comprehensive travel and medical cover before visiting Kenya. The advice cites recent blasts in Mombasa and Nairobi, warning of a high threat of terrorism and kidnapping.
