Give terrorists a blackout, Kaguthi advises

"On violence, they (terrorists) love to hear that there is maximum pain for maximum publicity and maximum fear to the citizens," he said.

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 6 – The Nyumba Kumi taskforce chairman Joseph Kaguthi says the Kenyan media should give terror attacks occurring in the country a blackout, since the attackers thrive on publicity.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, he explained that the key goal of terrorists is to spread fear and cause violence with maximum pain and maximum publicity.

“The terrorists’ agenda and philosophy is based on two things… it’s anchored on two levels; propaganda and violence,” he pointed out.

“On violence, they (terrorists) love to hear that there is maximum pain for maximum publicity and maximum fear to the citizens.”

He cautioned that too much coverage will instead escalate the number of attacks targeted at innocent Kenyans.

“The taskforce has gone all the way to looking at the counter terrorism invention of the United Nations. The UN is telling the country, please do not over amplify their success,” he stated.

“We are in war with Al Shabaab, the more you publicise the pain on our side; the more you are promoting the enemy because they use the two; violence and propaganda.”

Kaguthi wondered why the media fails to give wide coverage to local stories about Kenyans being killed by alcohol.

He advised the media to focus more on the efforts being played by the government to counter the problem.

As a result, the taskforce has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Marketing with an aim of re-branding its campaign to the public.

He pleaded for patriotism even as the media endeavours to inform, educate and entertain the public, as some information may be more harmful to the country’s well being.

“Those who are in the communication system you therefore have a critical role to balance when you are going to promote their interests and when you are going to promote our national interests,” he said.

“We are eating our own intestines by blaming one another such that we are not grateful for anything. We should be grateful for what we have on a daily basis.”

He said the taskforce has enhanced its work across the country, noting that there were already cluster groups set up in the various counties.

In Kwale County, he said there were more than 3,000 groups while in Makadara constituency alone, there were more 554 security groups.
