NAIROBI, Kenya, May 21 – Gatundu South Member of Parliament Joseph Ngugi Nyumu has died.

The 43-year-old lawmaker was pronounced dead at the Nairobi Hospital clinic in Gigiri, where he was rushed after collapsing in the bathroom at his Runda home.

“He collapsed in the bathroom and was rushed to the hospital and efforts to resuscitate him did not give positive results… he was pronounced dead on arrival. The reports I got from the doctors is that it was a massive cardiac arrest,” family spokesman and Gatanga MP Humphrey Njuguna told the media.

It is understood that the deceased – who leaves behind a widow and two children – was not unwell, as colleagues recounted their last moments with him.

“I spoke to him yesterday at 9pm and he was fine; he was just ok. He was up and about and for sure we don’t want to speculate,” Njuguna explained. “It was a sudden death and you know sudden deaths have a lot of speculation. For now, we will go by what the doctors have said.”

He describes the deceased – commonly referred to as Jossy – as a quiet but diligent MP who silently worked hard in Parliament for his people.

In mourning the first-time MP, President Uhuru Kenyatta described Nyumu as a diligent leader who demonstrated humility and selflessness in his aim to serve his constituents and the country.

“This morning, I learnt with deep sorrow and shock about the untimely passing away of my area Member of Parliament and friend, the Hon Joseph Ngugi Nyumu. With deep grief, I join his wife Joyce, children, and entire family; as well as the people of Gatundu South in mourning his loss,” the President said.

“I cannot comprehend how death has snatched one of our dependable leaders in his prime, and at such a crucial time when his leadership skills are required as we tackle the challenges of development in his county and our country,” President Kenyatta mourned.

Dozens of MPs visited the late Nyumu’s home on Wednesday afternoon to comfort the family as they mourned the loss of the lawmaker.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega recalled how he was scheduled to meet the MP on Wednesday.

“Yesterday we were with him in Parliament… I was telling him that there was something he was to sign for me but he told me, Kanini Kega let me sleep over it and then I will sign it the following day,” he recounted.

The late MP was due to visit Gatundu on Wednesday.

Kiambu County Coordinator for The National Alliance (TNA) party Gladys Chania recalled her last phone call with the MP: “It is very sad… it is true we have lost Jossy. Today he was supposed to come to Gatundu South to open the market.”
