NAIROBI, Kenya, May 22 – The High Court has ordered the wife of UK-based evangelist Gilbert Deya to serve the remainder of her three year jail term.

Mary Deya was freed on a Sh200,000 cash bail after serving a year in jail, following her conviction by the Kibera Chief Magistrate’s court in January 2011.

Mary was found guilty of stealing a child at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

On Thursday, Justice Msagha Mbogholi upheld the sentence handed to Mary and dismissed her appeal on grounds that there was sufficient evidence to send her behind bars.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the appellant stole this child and as a result gave false information as stated in count one and two,” the judge ruled.

“The offences were proven beyond any reasonable doubt and convictions were well founded.”

In her appeal, she had said that the court lacked sufficient evidence to sustain a conviction.
