According to Kenya Wildlife Service Paul Udoto, two adults and four juvenile elephants were massacred in the ranch but it was not clear who the poachers are and their motive was for killing the juveniles.
“So far the information I have is that six jumbos two adult and four juveniles were killed on Thursday night at Dawida Ranch; a combined team of security agencies have launched a massive manhunt for the suspects,” Udoto said.
He says the information coming from the ground is scanty since the incident occurred in a very remote region.
He however says the security agencies are following up on some leads.
“The ranch where the incident occurred is very remote and the information coming to us is very scanty. But our officers are pursuing a lead,” he said.
Kenya has in the recent past seen a surge in the number of elephants and rhinos killed; some 57 elephants and 11 rhinos have been killed since the beginning of this year.
Kenya lost 302 elephants and 59 rhinos in 2013 as compared to 2012 when 384 jumbos and 30 rhinos were butchered.
A new report commissioned by Born Free USA indicates that poachers in Kenya enjoy official protection where they are provided with weapons and allowed to pass through ports.
The report also suggests that proceeds of poaching are funding criminal activities like terrorism.
