MOMBASA, Kenya, Apr 1 – Radical Mombasa cleric Sheikh Abubakar Shariff also known as Makaburi has been shot dead by unknown assailants.

Makaburi who was in the company of another man was accosted near the Shanzu Law courts on Tuesday evening. Both of them were killed.

The cleric has been quoted several times in the past praising terrorist attacks in Kenya, saying it was the consequence of sending troops to Somalia.

He recently oversaw the renaming of the Masjid Musa mosque in Mombasa, which has been linked with radicalisation of youths in the Coast. The Mosque is now called Majid Shuhadaa.

Last month Makaburi was awarded Sh670,000 in damages by a Mombasa court for the violation of his rights by the police when they raided his house in 2011.

He had sued the Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions for the violation of his constitutional rights after police officers stormed his house in Saba Saba.

Makaburi was arrested after a grenade attack on a Kampala-bound bus in Nairobi in 2010 and the government never presented any evidence it had against him.

He was also facing three charges of incitement in connection with the chaos that followed the murder of Sheikh Aboud Rogo last year.

Several churches were burned and police officers attacked during the riots.
