This is after traffic police on Thika Road Highway apprehended a Public Service Vehicle en-route from Nairobi to Meru whose digital speed governor had been tampered with.
NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 30 – Police now say there could be a section of public transport operators who are flouting the new transport regulations which took effect in April.
Nairobi Traffic Police Superintendent in charge of highway patrol, Regina Mbithi says although this is the first case they have come across after the implementation of the new transport regulations, there may be need to enforce the rules more stringently.
“The commander who was in charge of that patrol instructed two officers to go to the vehicle and check what was happening, on checking they found the driver had tampered with the gadget because there was some wires which had been removed from the digital speed governor. Our officers detained the vehicle and towed it to the traffic headquarters.”
Mbithi says they are trying to locate the owner of the vehicle through the Registrar of Motor Vehicles since both the driver and the conductor fled.
She says matatu operators are still uncooperative in the execution on the new transport regulations.
“The matatu industry operators are not co-operating with the government because they government is trying as much as it can to stop the occurrence of fatal accidents because a vehicle travelling at 100km/h and carrying passengers is a problem… just in case its involved in an accident I think no one would survive,” she said.
“So, our officers did a commendable job because they intercepted the vehicle, it would have gone and caused an accident… we could now be talking about so many fatalities.”
