NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 – Over 600 suspected illegal immigrants were taken into police custody on Saturday morning in a security swoop on Eastleigh Nairobi.
Nairobi County Commander Benson Kibue told Capital FM News that the suspects were being processed at the Kasarani sports arena due to their large number.
“Kasarani is the sorting ground and it’s not just a police operation, it’s a multi-agency affair because we also have immigration officials there to ascertain the identities of these individuals,” he said.
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo announced on Saturday that they had arrested three suspected cattle rustlers and recovered seven firearms in a disarmament exercise in Samburu, among them “three G3 rifles which were stolen from police officers who were killed in Baragoi and four AK 47 illicit weapons. We also managed to recover 207 rounds of ammunitions.”
And Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday told Pokot residents that they would stamp out the cattle rustling menace.
“We want children to go to school, people to engage in agriculture, business activities among other income generating projects which can uplift their living standards but not useless activities like cattle rustling and female circumcision,” he said.
Kimaiyo said the ongoing operations in Nairobi, Mombasa and in cattle rustling prone areas would continue as security agencies worked to ensure peace and stability prevailed.
“I urge those holding illegal firearms to take advantage of the president’s two week’s amnesty and surrender them. Operation Usalama Watch is moving with speed to implement the president’s directive to the letter. Criminals and terrorists will not have a place in this country, and they better surrender,” he cautioned.
On Friday President Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya would no longer provide a safe heaven to those running from conflict in their countries if it resulted in insecurity.
“As much as we give refuge to Somalis in their hundreds of thousands, it will not be at the expense of Kenyans’ lives,” he said.
He made the statement just a day before Somali President Hassan Sheikh Muhamud paid him a visit and declared the terror group Al Shabaab, “a dying horse.”
“Al-Shabaab is losing; it is losing its training grounds, its recruitment and its finances. Al-shabab is doing the last kicks, what you see are kicks of a dying horse” he said.
