NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 18- Security has been beefed up in Mombasa during the Easter holidays in the wake of terror threats.

Police have mounted roads blocks along the main highways and deployed more officers along the beaches, shopping malls and hotels.

Mombasa County Commander Robert Kitur announced elaborate security measures to ensure that all visitors are safe.
“We have beefed up security in all social places where we expect crowds,” Kitur said.

Kitur says a special unit has been setup to coordinate all security operations.

“I would want to tell all those coming to Mombasa for these holidays to feel safe. We assure them that we are in control,” he said.

Meanwhile the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers (KAHC) CEO Sam Ikwaye said hotels at the Coast have shown a positive trend despite the recent security concerns in Mombasa.

Ikwaye says majority of the booking in most hotels comprises domestic tourists mainly from Nairobi among other parts of the country.

“Hotels are currently above 70 and 80 percent bed occupancy. We have also had bookings from Uganda and other countries in the continent,” Ikwaye said.

He however noted a drop in numbers of international tourists following a decline in charter flights received in the coastal region.

Most of the hotels, he said, have also their own security arrangement to ensure safety of visitors during the holiday.

“Most of the hotels in South Coast and North Coast have installed CCTV cameras and modern screening facilities at main entrance as way of improving security,” he said.
