Give us a break, govt tells rights groups

The president has consistently warned that whoever will be found with an illegal firearm after his two week ultimatum issued on April 17 expires, they will have themselves to blame.

He however observed that a few had responded positively to the plea.

“We are committed to the fight against crime whatever form it may take ranging from terrorism to cattle rustling,” he said.

Even as he asked the police to increase their resolve to combat terror networks, President Kenyatta told them to treat Kenyans with dignity.

He told the police to “obey the law as they enforce the law and to treat Kenyans with dignity to win their confidence.”

He said the government would shield those who executed their duties in accordance with the law.

Speaking at the event, Deputy President William Ruto said the Government was developing a robust security policy that would ensure police and other security agencies are equipped with modern technology to match sophistication by terrorists and other criminals.

The Deputy President said there are signs of winning the ongoing war on terror in the country.

“There are clear signs that the security challenges faced in the country will be overcome,” he said.

Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku said the ongoing security operation only targets criminals and aliens without proper documentation and terrorists.

He also added that police will not be guided by the ‘noise’ made by activist whom he said “wanted to divert the operation and disfranchise the National Police Service.”
