“Let us allow police do their work, we all need security,” he appealed.
A section of politicians and religious leaders have accused police of targeting particular people, but the Government says it only want to enhance the country’s security which has deteriorated.
“We should not politicise security; it is important and should be given the prominence it deserves,” the President said while assuring police officers of his Government’s support if they carry it out as per the law.
He urged Kenyans to guard against being divided along ethnic or religious lines as the country takes measures to address terror threats.
“Who will start a business, and employ our youth, if he knows the fruit of his labour will be stolen? What country will we have left if we allow these criminals to sow their hatred and division?” he posed.
“That is why our security is at the heart not just of my government’s policy and budgeting, but also at the core of our development planning in Vision 2030. Our plans will not be fully achieved in one night, one year, or one term, but we no longer have the luxury of time to put our house in order.”
He noted that it took decades to build the Kenyan nation and criminals purporting to be advancing a religious cause by perpetrating criminal acts will not be allowed to divide the existing unity among citizens.
“Though it pretends to be religiously motivated, it is little more than criminal viciousness, and we will treat it as such – we will resist the temptation to fight a war of religion or ethnicity,” he said.
He pointed out that the country was bearing the brunt of the conflicts that have affected neighbouring countries, which spilled over into the country.
“Some of our neighbours have fallen into civil conflict. Their troubles did not stay at home; they crossed borders, and became ours. The violent extremism we saw at Westgate continues to claim the lives of innocent Kenyans,” he lamented.
The President also warned that the Government will not condone any form of corruption especially in the security sector, saying it poses a direct threat to the country’s security and will be dealt with ruthlessly.
He said stern measures will be taken against those entrusted with securing the safety of the country who engages in corrupt practices.
