NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 22 – The Orange Democratic Movement now says the Opposition has played its role well in putting the Jubilee Government in check during its first year in power.

Speaking to Capital FM News, ODM acting party leader Anyang’ Nyong’o said claims that the Opposition has been weakened by the absence of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, were efforts to underrate their performance in the eyes of the public.

He claims that the government is allegedly using propaganda in a bid to outsource its ‘incompetence’ to the Opposition.

“It is not for us to provide alternatives, the Government is there to implement its manifesto…that’s what every government does,” he said.

“The Opposition is there to expose wrongs in Government so that people know that it’s not performing; that is democracy. If you want the Opposition to take over Government programmes, then vote it into power.”

“You cannot have an Opposition and expect it to fulfil Government programmes or give it alternatives; you can’t have your cake and eat it.”

The Opposition has lately been accused of only differing with Government programmes for the sake of it and more notably the Usalama Watch operation which is meant to weed out criminals in the country after an increase in terror attacks.

Nyong’o however says they support the Government in its bid to provide security to its citizen but oppose the approach.

“We cannot support a method that is wrong. If you are going to deal with security, you must make sure that the agents which are trying to provide it are themselves doing a good job or in the first place they are properly constituted,” he pointed out.

He said as much as the government efforts were noble, there was need to deal with corruption mostly in the Immigration Department which has been accused of illegally awarding aliens with Kenyan identification documents.

“The truth is, using the tyranny of both numbers and political hubris, Jubilee has succeeded in perfecting the reign of propaganda and the tyranny of lies that now leads it to attempt to outsource its incompetence to the opposition. This cannot be Jubilee’s salvation,” he argued.

The Opposition has lately been accused of a lacklustre show even as Kenyans put the government to task over its performance in one year.

Nyong’o however says the Opposition only points out mistakes since it does not have the mandate of the electorate.

“A well orchestrated propaganda is being fed to the Kenyan public seeking to find an excuse for Jubilee’s poor performance in government. This propaganda blames the Opposition for not having kept Jubilee “in check”, hence its poor performance,” he stated.

“What utter nonsense and absolute balderdash! One would have thought that a weak opposition would give Jubilee a field day to push all its policies through Parliament without let or hindrance,” Nyong’o said on Sunday.
