NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 16 – Some 225 illegal immigrants are set to be deported to various countries in the ongoing crackdown following increased terror threats.

Administration Police Spokesperson Masoud Mwinyi says 412 refugees found to have strayed will be sent back to camps. He said all refugees must be within the gazetted refugee camps, which are Kakuma and Dadaab.

“Screening at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium has been strengthened and persons undergoing security are being processed expeditiously on a daily basis. We would like to reiterate that this centre is purely for screening and has no suspects held at the end of every operation day,” he stated.

“The suspects processed at the centre are either released, taken to court, transferred to designated refugee camps or deported to their countries origin.”

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Mwinyi said police officers countrywide are under firm instructions to continue with the crackdown, which was launched following increased insecurity cases in the country.

“The only time when this operation will be called to a close is when we have satisfied ourselves that everything is okay,” he affirmed.

“If we have elements in the country that are undesired for one reason or the other must be addressed as per the law.”

To human right groups, he said: “This operation will not stop. These people from the human right groups are also in Kenya…they need safety which they are now shouting against.”

“They need the same conducive environment even to advance their own agenda, business or otherwise. Security is not about popularity, it can be hard sometime on people.”

He has also denied claims of police harassment in the ongoing crackdown, but said anybody who has complaints was free to report to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

“Allegations that our police officers are using this operation to benefit themselves… we only treat them as allegation since no one has formally reported such a case,” he said.

Since the operation started, 1,136 suspects from 14 different nationalities have been screened. Of these, 186 have been released and 313 arraigned in court.

To boost the current numbers of police in the country, he announced that a total of 3,221 officers will graduate from the AP training college at Embakasi on Thursday adding on the recently 2,209 officer who graduated from Kenya Police service.
