2 cops among four people killed in Nairobi blast

PANGANI-EXPLOSIONNAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 23 – Two policemen were among four people killed on Wednesday night in Nairobi after a suspicious car that they had intercepted exploded as it was being taken to the Pangani Police Station.

Eye witnesses said the blast occurred at about 9pm.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo who was among those who visited the scene said his officers had detained the vehicle and were taking the occupants for questioning when the blast went off outside the police station.

“They spotted the car and suspected it before boarding and leading the driver to the station. A police car then trailed that of the terrorists to the station,” said Kimaiyo at the station.

It exploded at the entrance of the station killing the occupants, including the officers.

The blast was so powerful that it was heard several kilometers away.

Witnesses said when the blast went off, other officers who were at the station first took cover before realising they were not under threat and eventually approached the vehicle.

Kimaiyo said they will intensify their operations to curb terror attacks in the country.

The attack comes as police intensify a crackdown to weed out aliens who have been living illegally in Kenya.
