NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 19 – Deputy President William Ruto’s Communications Secretary was on Tuesday night carjacked by gunmen near State House Nairobi, raising serious questions on security enforcement in a city that has witnessed an upsurge of crime lately.
David Mugonyi was getting home near St George’s School on Dennis Pritt Road at about 10 pm when four gunmen forced their way into his vehicle and sped off, according to police and witnesses.
They then ordered him to ask his friends to send him money through MPESA, while driving around the city even as police mounted a major security operation.
“They made him call several people, asking to be sent money through his phone,” Mugonyi’s Deputy Emmanuel Talam told Capital FM News. READ Uhuru’s kin carjacked, robbed
At about 1am, the thugs dumped him in Mlolongo on Mombasa Road and took off, leaving him with slight injuries on the head.
Nairobi police chief Benson Kibue said they were looking for his vehicle, a Toyota Prado, mobile phones and other valuables stolen from him.
“We will get them,” Kibue who coordinated the security operation soon after the incident was reported to them on Tuesday night said.
During the Tuesday night security operation, Kibue had told Capital FM News that “we are doing everything possible to rescue him and recover the motor vehicle.”
CID director Ndegwa Muhoro whose officers were involved in tracking down signals of mobile phones used by the criminals too assured that they were following leads, but could not reveal much.
“We have leads and I can assure you we will get them,” he said.
Mugonyi was not available for comment on Wednesday morning but an official at the Deputy President’s office who spoke to him said he is “fine and relaxing after the night ordeal.”
Police have said they are determined to fight this new wave of crime where criminals appear to have devised a new way of getting their target mobilise funds using mobile phones, as opposed to going to the bank.
One of the officers involved in the Tuesday night security operation has told Capital FM News that they have received reports of at least four similar cases in the past two weeks.
