The Toyota Prado was recovered on Thursday morning at the Pipeline slum in Embakasi where it was abandoned by thugs who had driven Mugonyi around the city, while ordering him to ask friends to send him money through his mobile phone.
Mugonyi was made to transfer Sh120,000 sent to him by friends to mobile phones provided to him by the four gunmen.
“The vehicle has been recovered and an investigation is underway, and the search for the thugs who are still at large,” said Peter Katam, who is in charge of Kilimani police division where the incident was first reported.
The vehicle was dusted for fingerprints on Thursday as detectives interrogated people around the place where it was found to assist in the investigation, but police said no major clue was found.

“We don’t have reason to believe at the moment that it is anything more than a robbery but an investigation is still going on,” one senior police officer constantly briefed on the matter said, after a local newspaper said the thugs were possibly on mission or were sent to specifically look for the Deputy President’s Communications Secretary.
“Thugs have a tendency of saying they have been sent so as to threaten their target, but from Mugonyi’s statement and our analysis of the whole issue, this is far from it, these were thugs on a random mission,” the officer said.
Capital FM News has learnt that CID director Ndegwa Muhoro is taking keen interest in the matter after instructing the investigating officer at the Kilimani police division to give him up-to-the-minute briefs.
Mugonyi who previously headed the communications department at the National Assembly was carjacked by four gunmen who pounced on him at about 10 pm, as he waited for his gate to be opened near St George’s Girls school on Dennis Pritt road, not far from State House.
