NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 25 – The Kenya China Economic and Trade Association and the Kenya Overseas Chinese Association have invited Kenyans and Chinese to share their thoughts on China-Kenya relations in a writing contest dubbed ‘My China Story.’
The invitation for submissions explains it is “in order to further promote the friendship and mutual understanding between the people of China and Kenya.”
Those willing to participate have until April 15 to make their submissions either in an original essay or poem of not more than 600 words, “about your view or experience on China and China-Kenya friendship and cooperation.”
Entrants are only allowed to make one submission each and have been urged to ensure their full name, gender, age, address, organisation, cell phone number and email address are included in their entries.
Participants will also be required to sign and attach an, “Originality and Copyright Authorisation Statement,” downloadable here before emailing their submissions to chinakenyastory@gmail.com.
The best entries stand a chance of winning an award and reward in addition to the chance of being published in a possible compilation.
“By submitting the essay or poem, the participant agrees to transfer all rights of the essay or poem to the organisers. The organisers reserve the right of final interpretation for the content and items hereinabove,” the invitation for submissions makes clear.
The competition comes as Kenya and China celebrate over 50 years of diplomatic ties as explained by China’s former Ambassador to Kenya Liu Guangyuan.
“Kenya won its independence through great efforts and arduous struggles. China had offered firm support to Kenya in this regard and became one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with Kenya.”
In the past decade, China has been actively involved in Kenya’s infrastructural development and at the end of the 2012/2013 financial year, China’s cumulative direct investment in Kenya had reached Sh41 billion.
“China has become Kenya’s largest source of foreign direct investment and second largest trade partner,” Guangyuan elaborated.
