NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 27 – Two Governors have criticised passage of a Bill by Members of Parliament that denies them the right to fly the Kenyan flag on their vehicles.

Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu and his Nyandarua Counterpart Daniel Waithaka Mwangi said that the National Assembly should have utilised the time to discuss matters of national interests and issues that directly affect Kenyan citizens.

Irungu said the issues of emblems and flags are irrelevant and have no positive impact to the country.

“The flag was a show of patriotism and that’s why were flying it… to show our love for Kenya.”

On his part, Governor Mwangi said already his administration was in the process of coming up with a county emblem.

“Kenya is ours and it belongs to Wanjiku. We shall work for Kenyans without bearing in mind that so and so brought the idea of fighting us,” he said.

They said the country was facing a myriad of challenges among them security, food safety among other things.

On Wednesday, the National Assembly passed a Bill that bars Cabinet Secretaries and Governors from flying the Kenyan flag on their vehicles. READ Cabinet Secretaries, Governors won’t fly Kenyan flag

The National Flag, Emblems and Names (Amendment) Bill, 2013 only allows the President, Deputy President, the two Parliament Speakers and the Chief Justice to fly the Kenyan flag.

MPs said Governors would be allowed to fly flags of their respective counties as provided in the County Governments Act.

Attempts by Majority Leader Aden Duale to marshal support for the amendment to allow Cabinet Secretaries to fly the flag failed, after 71 MPs voted against his proposal while 53 backed it.

“We cannot have an Executive of only the President and Deputy President having the flag, I want to convince my colleagues let us also allow the CSs to have the flags,” stated Duale.

“Just as we did in allowing diplomats to fly the flag, we should do the same for our CSs who are also performing a delegated duty on behalf of His Excellency, the President,” said Majority Coalition Parliamentary Whip Katoo ole Metito.

Governors will now be restricted to the county flag if the President assents to the Bill.
