NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 14 – The Kenya Meteorological Department says the long rains have started in various parts of the country.

In a press statement, the Meteorological Services Director Peter Ambenje indicated that several parts of western Kenya and the central highlands are expected to receive heavy rainfall for the next three days before it reduces in intensity in the last two days of the forecast period.

He pointed out that a good build up of clouds has occurred in various parts of the country from early this week and this has resulted in light-to-moderate rainfall over most parts of the country.

“The forecast for the 2014 March-May seasonal rainfall indicates that the onset of the rainfall is expected during the second to third week of March over most parts of western Kenya,” he said in the statement.

“The onset in the other areas including the better parts of the central Rift Valley, south eastern lowlands, and central highlands including Nairobi area is expected during third to fourth week of March 2014. The northern parts will have their proper onset and proper establishment of the season in the early parts of April 2014,”he explained.

He stated that areas in the Lake Basin, western Kenya and central highlands received heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.

“A good build up of cloudiness has occurred in various parts of the country in from Tuesday, 11 March 2014. This has led to light to moderate rainfall over most parts of the country,” he said.

“Some areas in the Lake Basin, western Kenya and central highlands received heavy (20mm) rainfall in 24 hours up to Thursday (13 March 2014) morning.

These were Kakamega, Shikoti and Butere in Kakamega County that recorded 20.5mm, 38.6mm and 35.5mm respectively, Suba Meteorological Station received 43.8mm while Kisumu International Airport and Embu recorded 34.6mm and 31.4mm respectively.”
