NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 6 – A witness has told the International Criminal Court that Deputy President William Ruto slapped former Electoral Commission (ECK) Chairman the late Samuel Kivuitu in 2007.

Ruto’s lawyer David Hooper asked the 13 prosecution witness to confirm his allegation that Ruto slapped Kivuitu after the former ECK chairman refused to announce the results.

“At one point Kivuitu wanted to leave and Ruto grabbed him and slapped him and told him you must announce the results and you have to announce Odinga the winner. Did you really see that?” Hooper asked.

The witness responded: “Kivuitu refused to announce the election results and Ruto slapped him and he was moved from there.”

The witness further told the court that ODM members James Orengo and Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o were present.

According to the witness after Kivuitu left the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, ODM and PNU delegates stayed behind.

On Thursday most of the proceedings were held in closed session.

The witness testifying in the case against Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang on Wednesday told the court that Sang used his show at Kass FM to incite Kalenjins to demonstrate against a stolen election.

Hooper will continue cross-examination on Friday.
