NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 30- There was panic in Mpeketoni, Lamu County when a hand grenade was found inside a church on Sunday.

Area police boss Joseph Sigei said the church service was about to start when the pastor stumbled on the device under a table.

He said bomb experts and anti terror police officers have collected the grenade for detonation as they launch investigations.

“It was lethal and it could have caused damage if it had exploded but detectives have secured it for detonation,” said Sigei.

Police are yet to establish who left the grenade at the church.

According to detectives, the safety pin of the grenade was removed ready for detonation before it was discovered.

“We are still investigating the motive of the assailants but we cannot rule out an act of terrorism,” Sigei added.

Last Sunday six worshipers were killed at the Joy in Jesus Church in Likoni, Mombasa by three gunmen who stormed the church during the service and started shooting indiscriminately at the worshippers. READ 100 youths detained as Likoni toll hits 6
