Anti-graft war cascading to counties – Kenyatta

Matemu also said that sluggish judicial and adjudication of cases had remained a challenge in fighting corruption.

“Despite the on-going reforms taking place in the Judiciary, the judicial process and the adjudication of cases is still slow,” he complained.

“EACC will work with the Judiciary and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to speed the disposition of corruption cases.”

Optimistic that the war will be won, he said both County and National Governments needed to work together with the commission to boost its efforts.

He warned that no person will be spared no matter his status, if found to have been involved in corruption related activities.

Among the achievements of the commission, Matemu said was recently recovered parcels of public land in Mombasa, Nairobi and other areas valued at Sh5.5 billion.

President Kenyatta also directed the Attorney General and the Department of Justice, the National Treasury and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to develop a comprehensive national ethics and anti-corruption policy, as a key pillar of the country’s development agenda by the end of December this year.

As part of their task, the President said those charged with the development of the anti-corruption policy will develop, within the same timeframe, proposals for the review and strengthening of the anti-corruption and ethics legal framework in line with the country’s medium term priorities.

“This strategy should go to the root of our society. This I say because, I am more than convinced to win this war, we must start from the beginning, we must start with young people at the kindergarten level, and build on them from scratch,” he said.

Speaking at the forum, Deputy President William Ruto said the Jubilee Government cannot deliver on its manifesto if corruption persists.

Ruto said the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Strategic Plan will complement the development efforts of Jubilee Government.

The Deputy President said the roadmap and bench marks set by strategic plan will transform Kenya by following up cases of mismanagement and fraud up to the county levels to curb wastage that undermine the transformative agenda.

“No one plans to be broke…these things happens to those who do not have a plan,” he said while applauding EACC for coming up with the report.
